Ozone Saunas

One of the latest sauna products to enter the market is the steam sauna with ozone. Proponents of steam ozone saunas say:

Using the steam sauna with ozone allows the steam to surround the body and ozone can be introduced through the skin. Humid heat opens the pores, which allows the ozone through the skin to the bloodstream, where it can travel to the fat and lymph tissue. It is very important to cleanse the lymph tissue of toxins and the ozone/steam sauna is the easiest and best way to accomplish this.

Like any claims made by manufacturers or research firms hired by manufacturers to do studies, these claims should be taken with a grain of salt. Many people are under the impression that ozone is a wonderful and helpful thing. After all, the ozone layer is what protects us from the potentially harmful rays of the sun. There are also widely advertised ozone generating air purifiers on the market today.

In order to understand ozone a bit better, you need to determine exactly what it is. Ozone is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. Two atoms of oxygen combined form the oxygen that we breath. The third atom of oxygen in ozone can detatch from the molecule and bind with other molecules, thereby changing their chemical composition. It is this ability to react with other substances that makes ozone dangerous.

According to the EPA it is this ability to react with organic materials that make up the human body that can potentially cause harmful health consequences. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs. Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight respiratory infections. People vary widely in their susceptibility to ozone. Healthy people, as well as those with respiratory difficulty, can experience breathing problems when exposed to ozone. Exercise during exposure to ozone causes a greater amount of ozone to be inhaled, and increases the risk of harmful respiratory effects.

Although Ozone sauna manufacturers tout many health benefits of combining ozone and saunas, you should definitely make sure you do your research before purchasing or using one of these products
